July 22, 2010 - Update from Bob Moore, thank you Bob!
Very good day yesterday – no additional milfoil discovered!
TLIS members Diane Clay, Susie Wilding-Hartford & daughter Sadie Hartford conducted a thorough survey from the Woodbury Dam (Dam 1) to the channel markers just past the Woodbury public boat launch area with no Variable Milfoil (VM) observed. Cam Dufour and Whitney Grass of our staff paddled, floated, swam, hiked, etc. the stream from the Woodbury Dam to the house on the Hallowell Road where you, Ryan and I pulled out of last Monday with no new discovery of VM as well.
It took them a little over two hours to navigate that section of what is known as Purgatory Stream. TLIS member Terry Averill, Woodbury Pond dam keeper, was on site with us and said that is what he has always known the stream as. Terry also said that Cam and Whitney had done something he has always wanted to do for years – navigate the whole stream – but after hearing about their escapades, he probably won’t! A kayak would not have made it through due to trees, thick brush, etc. in certain areas – they used a small inflatable that fortunately Diane Clay had brought with her as it worked great. Lots of broken glass just past the Woodbury Dam, but after the first few hundred feet the stream and surrounding thicket was pretty much untouched save a few beaver dams.
Photos from yesterday are below. Betty Adams of the KJ was with us for over an hour yesterday, observing and interviewing members of the team. An article is scheduled for Saturday’s paper.
Terry mentioned that it is a frequent stop for water trucks.
Thanks, Bob.
